This is Woman Knitting at the Window (1902), by the Danish artist Peter Ilsted (1861-1933) who. together with his brother-in-law Vilhelm Hammershøi and Carl Holsoe, were founder members of a celebrated progressive school of painting known as 'The Free Exhibition'. Now better known as the Copenhagen Interior School, they were famous for painting 'sunshine and shadow', and all three had a predilection for views of women painted from behind. I love the fact that this woman is using the last of the natural light to get on with her work.
