Painted in about 1905, this may not be the most beautiful painting I've ever posted on here, but I believe its the first one by a member of the British peerage. Yes, the painter is George Howard, the 9th Earl of Carisle (1843-1911). The subjects are his daughter Lady Cecila Roberts and his granddaughters Winifred and Christina Roberts. Winifred became an artist and married a fellow artist, Ben Nicholson. George Howard's biography tells me, among other things, that he was 'gentle and unassuming'. He also owned Castle Howard, a great Yorkshire stately home which was used for the filming of Brideshead Revisited in 1981.
